Pre-School

Our early childhood program has the unique opportunity to model the very best for young children today, a developmentally appropriate program in a safe and nurturing setting where care and education are indistinguishable.

At Good Sam our self-contained program offers a 2-5 days a week experience of small class enrollment with two teachers per class.   The classrooms are language rich environments which include reading-readiness skills, recognition of capital and small letters, recognition of a child’s own name and how to developmentally print it.

Math is taught using the multi-sensory approach exploring spatial relationships, counting, matching and sequencing. A thematic approach is used to introduce Social Studies and Science.

Pre-Kindergarten Program

This 5 day afternoon program is for children whose 5th birthday falls on or before December 31st. The curriculum includes the preschool program of studies and additional activities which include:

Math - Problem Solving, Connections, Reasoning, Measurement
Communication - Through Diagrams, Pictures, Language, Symbols
Language - A stimulating environment is essential to language development.

In our Pre-Kindergarten program the children expand their awareness through:

- careful listening
- exchanging ideas

--- freely with a ‘small’ group of peers
--- through written records of their thoughts
--- discovering knowledge through books and stories-on-tape.

A variety of additional experiences extend the children’s awareness of their world through classroom visitors, field trips and bi-monthly visits to the Book-Mobile. Spanish (vocabulary, movement, song) is taught on Fridays.

* Children younger than 5 years may be evaluated for readiness. A recommendation from the child’s previous preschool teacher is required.

This class has been canceled for the 2010-2011 school year but will resume next year.

1st- 4th Grades

There is nothing quite as magical as the early years in school.  At Good Samaritan School our 1st - 4th grade students academic futures begin to take shape from the very moment they set foot in a classroom.  By establishing a solid foundation we pave the way for a truly enriching educational experience.

Our small intimate classroom size provides a unique educational environment. A strong core curriculum emphasizes optimum learning opportunities. Higher curriculum standards which include, but are not limited to, all subjects prescribed by the State of Oregon for 1st - 4th grades, are adhered to.. Early exposure to foreign languages in relationship to cultures studied and music and art enrich our program. Monthly field trips naturally enhance all areas of studies. The purpose of every trip is to extend the classroom learning environment. Developmentally appropriate community service projects are designed for the children´s participation. Learning centers, special projects and many forms of activities require the students to find solutions to problems and learn to develop their self-confidence as independent learners.

Music Program

Music instruction begins in our 3 year old class and extends through 1st - 4th grades. The emphasis for all levels is on a love of music as well as on musical literacy and performance opportunities, including the Christmas programs. Listening, movement and playing musical instruments is fundamental to our 3’s program. Reading musical symbols and terms in print music, recognizing and identifying simple forms, identifying instruments and control of voice to produce varied tone qualities are key components to our 4-9 years old program. Throughout the school year musicians are invited to participate in the program sharing their gifts and talents with our children, parents, and staff. The annual Children’s Concert in conjunction with the church’s "Sundays at Four" is held in February.
